Explaining When to Apply for Social Security Benefits if You were Injured on the Job in New Jersey

You should apply for Social Security Disability right away if you become disabled. The day when your disability began is called the onset date, and you’ll need to provide this date to Social Security.

It will be required that you prove you were disabled from that date forward. You will also need to provide a year’s worth of medical records up to the onset date. These medical records will help Social Security to understand your health status prior to the time when you became disabled.

If your disability application is approved, you still won’t receive benefits until the sixth month after your onset date. In contrast, Social Security Supplemental Income benefits begin in the first month after you file your application. Watch the video to learn more.
