The Steps After You File a Social Security Claim in New Jersey

Once you have filed your application for Social Security Disability, you can expect the Social Security Administration to take 3-6 months to review your application. Their initial determination will either say that you are disabled or that your application has been denied. If they say you are disabled, you’ll soon begin receiving benefits. If your application is denied, you will need to appeal by requesting reconsideration.

The Social Security Administration’s response to your request for reconsideration will likely take another 3-6 months to review, followed by another response. You may be accepted, or you may receive a second denial. If your application is denied again, we would assist you with your request for a hearing, and that usually takes 20-24 months before you are provided with a hearing date.

As your attorneys, we collect your medical records on your behalf from the point of the first appeal, and we provide these to Social Security. The process takes 3-4 months, and we would send you a letter requesting your updated medical information, including doctors you are seeing and your current medications. We then follow up with requests to those doctors, seeking more information.

We work with you during your Social Security Disability application process to make it less stressful for you during what can be a difficult time. Watch the video to learn more.
